we had about 150 people here friday night for the kurentovanje pre-party. full polka band and everything. i doubt it will turn into any new members, but it was so much fun. great exposure. and wyn supply let us borrow their 25 foot flatbed/stake body truck to use as our float for saturday's parade. the skidmark community reaches far and wide. it never ceases to surprise me.

matt hacket is the other new member. he's got a cb750. lives in strongsville. good dude. luckily, he's been here a few times when jordan has been here. so the carb work has been less burdensome than normal.

the place is still a mess from friday night. gonna spend the rest of the day putting it back together.

pj took runner-up at the chicago IMS! i don't know who beat him, but it hardly matters. that's effing HUGE that he took that little canam that far. pretty pumped for him. i hope he finds more time to spend in here. he's too valuable to everyone to only be here one day every other week.

it was really cool that elliott and jordan were here actually working during friday's party. they were welding and getting shit done as the party was in full effect. i loved it. jt came to work (forgetting about the party) and ended up hanging out. castillo was around all weekend, thankfully. he was incredibly helpful and it was great just to know that he was there to handle things if needed. he's pretty damned level-headed and completely trustworthy. plus he really knows his shit. can't ask for much more.

got another request to get the social membership thing rolling. i'm gonna have to get on that.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-22822104651873620432018-02-02T20:08:00.001-08:002018-02-02T20:08:08.130-08:00been a super fast week since the IMS show. had a bmw motorcycle owners of cleveland group meet here last night. about 40 people. mellow. cool. all older, all white... whatever. they LOVED soulcraft. -of course they fucking loved soulcraft...

tomorrow morning is a welding class. i think we have 5 people signed up, unfortunately. shit...maybe i'll take it... had a great experience with airgas getting the consumables, today. very happy about that.

the parade and the kick-off party are next weekend. gotta make a float for that.

mama tried is the last weekend of the month. freaking out about that because we have zero dollars.

but i got two dudes to join the garage in as many days. matt bought 3 months yesterday and i picked up his 78 cb750 with molly today. and then rich krupka also bought 3 months today. i'm picking up his bike(s) tomorrow. both new dudes are gonna be great additions.

looks like i'll get something worked out with ama for this year's vmd.

j&p shipped me (at their cost!) a new tire changer!!! i got it today and haven't even had a minute to open the box. i can't believe it. najar pushed the guy into offering it...thank god for najar. he must know i'm too much a pussy to ask for things like that on my own.

looks like something might come together with psi, too.

mark adams has been taking KILLER pics at all the get-togethers here. having a photo booth set up for gatherings is way cooler than i ever thought it'd be. can't believe how people respond to it.

looking forward to the coming months of sheer madness at this place. i have a feeling things are about to blow up. can't wait for the hectic insanity of it all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-16120405256811947552018-01-29T18:15:00.001-08:002018-01-29T18:15:22.805-08:00

Many months ago, Tom Wronkovich of Whiskey Grade got this ball rolling when he decided he needed to step into my world and help Skidmark Garage stay alive. Because he's connected to some serious decision makers, he proposed the idea of having community motorcycle garages (CMGs) play some sort of role in all the IMS shows this season. This led to Zach Rudio from Progressive's marketing firm, MatchMG, getting in touch with me. Zach contacted a CMG in every city that the IMS show was going to and organized the stage schedule in such a way that we were all given the opportunity to plug our respective business (and business model) to the entire crowd in the Progressive area of the show. I was lucky enough to present six times over the course of the weekend.

Even with this stroke of luck, I still could not afford a booth of my own. That's when Derek Smith from Thunder Roads of Ohio stepped in and offered to help me out. Derek believes in Skidmark Garage and has offered me assistance several times as I've been struggling to get a foothold. He attends all the Skidmark functions and continually asks how he can help. Plans for the IMS weekend got super crazy when Jeff Najar called to ask if it'd be alright to have the official IMS afterparty at Skidmark Garage on the Friday night of the show. The topper was getting a call from Meredith Loza, who is in charge of the Shift at IMS area, wanting Skidmark to have a presence inside Shift. Skidmark Garage's role at the IMS show went from 0 to 9 in only a few days. The anxiety leading up the weekend was not insignificant.

Skidmark's intern, Jada Lawrence, came into the garage and did a lot of work that most people might consider below them. She swept every inch, organized, cleaned, and just kept finding things to take care of. Elliott Copen came in late one night and spent a good hour or two wiping down every surface of the bar. The next day, Janeen Rumph showed up after spending the first half of the day cleaning houses with her sister, and cleaned the whole lounge. I mean mopped, dusted, wiped, disinfected, vacuumed, and Fabreezed that place. It truly had never looked better.

Meanwhile, Molly Vaughan was busy creating the new flier, communicating with the IMS people, being my rock as I freaked out, marketing and promoting like her life depended on it (all the while teaching high school). Tim spent every spare minute making the garage look like it should. His eye for purposeful design and his willingness to just get shit done are two things I lack in my own life. The garage would not function without the presence of these two people.

All in all, there were six bikes going to the IX Center from Skidmark Garage. Because the members of Skidmark are among the most generous humans on the planet, I was afforded the opportunity to borrow PJ's highpoint trailer to pick up Al Wransky's perfect 1977 Goldwing. And then Dave Nolan didn't hesitate to offer the use of his monster trailer to cart four bikes to the show, while PJ took his CanAm and Jordan's CB750A. Getting to use Dave's trailer was only half the battle, because my old truck can't pull it. So member John Reinhardt offered to tow it to the show AND come back to pick it up Sunday evening with his gigantic diesel work truck. Mark Adams and John helped me load that trailer up the morning before the show.

Tim and Scuba Steve spent a few hours with me Thursday afternoon loading my truck and unloading it at the IX Center. They did some heavy lifting. Between the three of us, we got all four bikes from the trailer and the entire booth loaded in. Luckily, Ashley Hyde was available Friday morning to take control of set-up inside the joint. She dictated what goes where and made sure people followed the rules. And she couldn't have been kinder about it. Tim and Janeen were vital to getting things set-up as I ran around like a dummy trying to connect dots and mentally prepare for all the stage time Progressive gave me. Tim had the brilliant idea to have Mark Adams take a high resolution photo of a pegboard full of tools and use that as the booth backdrop rather than lug an entire work bench to the IX. I ordered it from Banners.com, and a wonderful woman named Anicko worked with me to get it done right, and for a fair price.

Seeing the familiar face of Jacqui Van Ham as I approached the stage was important to my mental state. She reassured me that things were going smoothly and that I should relax. She introduced me to the three guys that were running the tech behind the scenes, Sam, Mike, and TJ. These three dudes were friendly, mellow and clearly had their jobs under control. Knowing the sound and video were going to work seamlessly further set me at ease. Those four people running the Progressive show area couldn't have been doing a better job. I quickly looked forward to the time I got spend with them. It was an unexpected structure that I built upon during the weekend. Jacqui's introduction of Skidmark Garage was flattering every time as I walked up on stage.

Friday night was the afterparty that Jeff Najar organized. He introduced me to so many heavy hitters and did everything he could to help promote Skidmark Garage. The people inside those four walls Friday night were many and important. We had around 110 people hanging out and getting exposed to the community. Wilbur, who is one of Skidmark's biggest fans, even drove in from as far as Altoona, PA to hang out! Bear Haughton from Old Bike Barn and his wife Lauren drove up from Columbus to show support and to discuss cat butts. Thankfully, mister IMS himself, Grady Pfeiffer, was gracious and kind to Skidmark Garage and reimbursed me for the party without question. And he already wants to discuss how Skidmark Garage can be represented at the IMS next year. Mark Adams set up a little photo studio during the party and the people just ate it up. He also provided many of the pictures used in my powerpoint when I was speaking on the Progressive stage.

Alex Rossborough is an enthusiastic supporter of everything Skidmark. Not only does he teach classes in Skidmark, but he is always promoting Skidmark, and joined me on stage to interview members of the garage to further prove to the crowd that the garage is full of regular people, not intimidating mechanics. He constantly cheers me on and believes in the mission of Skidmark Garage as much as anyone. Getting on the stage to be interviewed isn't for everyone, but Jordan McGhee, Sean Harris, Elliott Copen, Thomas Hayes, JT Teringo, Mark Adams, and Greg Castillo all volunteered, and all of them killed it. I was lucky enough to have Bear come up on the stage with me twice to plug Old Bike Barn and talk for a minute about how important the CMG movement is to not only his business, but to the greater good of our society.

At the show, I had help from so many members of the garage. Pat Wilson, Thomas Hayes, Elliott Copen, Tim Fearon, Janeen Rumph, Karl Walker, and Eric Eisenberg all sat behind the table and at the Shift area at some point or another. Eisenberg was a trooper. He sat with Al's other Goldwing at Shift for 90% of the show. He talked about the garage with anyone that walked by and never complained for a moment.

During the madness of the show, I was neglecting my stomach. Molly's parents came to the show, despite their utter disinterest in motorcycles, just to show some support. Both of them, separately, somehow recognized the fact that I needed pizza. I was so grateful to them for just navigating the massive crowd to get me food. I didn't know how hungry I was until they came back both times with the best food on earth...pizza.

The load-out is always a dreaded time after a show. But this time, there was this incredible coordinated effort by Dave Nolan, Mark Adams, Sean Harris, Pat Wilson, Tim Fearon, Janeen Rumph, Jordan McGhee, PJ, and John Reinhardt to get all the items together, loaded into trucks, cars, and trailers, and driven back to the garage. Everything got unloaded into Skidmark by 7pm. The packing up, loading out, and transport is always a process that takes hours longer than it should. But not this time. One of the best moments of this whole weekend was watching the Skidmark community come together as one to clean up and get out of the IX Center.

I stressed a lot about the IMS show in the weeks leading up to it. I realized last night as I was heading home that there is absolutely no possible way that it could have been successful without the participation and help of every single person described above. I am so used to thinking that Skidmark is one-man-show because the bills are only paid by one person. I now understand that Skidmark Garage is as far from a one-man-show as possible. One man could not have pulled off this weekend's event. It took 30 other people to help carry the weight. I couldn't be more thankful to you all. I believe this past weekend was the final key to the financial stability of Skidmark Garage. I'm proud and quite lucky to have had the help of all of you.

add to this pj and jordan being in the competition, and i feel like the skidmark garage name will be on tips of many tongues throughout the weekend. i'm nervous, excited, and starting to get stressed about being able to deliver. luckily, pj is gonna let me use his enclosed trailer to haul bikes and stuff back and forth.

my brother, dave, came and hung out all day, today. it was great to hang out with him. we didn't get shit done, like i had planned, but nonetheless it was great. he said he's gonna come back next friday and help set up the show. i SO need the help.

tim is gonna be here to help thursday and then hopefully through the weekend. it is shows like this that his value is apparent. thanks zeus he and neener are around.

mark took photos of a complete tool bench so i can print it and hang it in the back of the booth rather than bringing that entire bike tool bench. it could be the biggest hassle on the planet. if i can get this banner printed and in-hand in time...holy time savings!

last night was pretty slow, but the night before was killer. karl, jt, elliott, jordan, and al were all here at the same time. it was heaven. it's what i've always pictured this place to be. now i just gotta get some money rolling in this shit...

had business proposition come my way that affects my specific model of operation. i'm not into it, even if it is a way to make money, it's not what skidmark is about. but should i decide down the road to jump on the bandwagon, i'm sure i'll have that opportunity.

a friend is splitting with her significant other and she confided in me. that was tough to see such sadness.

old bike barn's greasy dozen looks like it's gonna be killer. bear and i had a call today and things seem in line. i'm really excited to be a part of this.

but after the rough start, it smoothed out. dave nolan was here welding the aluminum tank with ron. karl was here and disassembled his subframe. sean harris got further on his triumph chopper. mark adams may have even started playing with his bmw. marty and jordan came in and played with their quad some more.

i spent a good several hours just trying to prepare for the ims speeches on the progressive stage. i was so lost in my focus of things that molly finally stepped in and put me back on track with a simple, "what ever you're doing, it has to be either to keep members happy, or find new members. if what you're doing doesn't help either of those, than stop doing it." so simple. so important. once she said that, i was able to really focus.

i smell. i can smell myself. and i'm out of deodorant here. sucks. cuz i smell...

killed a mouse in here. set a trap and minutes later the little guy got caught. hate it. but it's necessary.

pj had an entire engine delivered here today. crazy fucker. hope he comes in tomorrow. having him and dave nolan here at the same time is fun.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-51056201249870186032018-01-14T12:16:00.000-08:002018-01-14T12:16:56.478-08:00today i had to forbid the return of a friend to skidmark garage. his alcoholism became such that he hasn't worked in forever and lost a place to live. he has been making poor decisions for a long time and i enabled all of it by permitting him to booze at the garage. realizing i am part of the reason he continues to drink, i had to put an end to my part in the enabling. it was tough. but he handled it like a man. he just said, "ok", grabbed his stuff and a beer and left. i was having heart palpitations about it all morning, and now that it's over i don't really feel any better. my heart is still racing and i feel like a dick.

dave nolan has been here since 9am with ron copfer welding the aluminum tank together. i haven't even stopped over there yet because i was so consumed with handling the other situation i neglected to show any love to one of the most important members of this place.

karl came in last night and is here again today playing around with his shovelhead. i really love having him here. i wish he could find time to be here way more often, but between being an air force pilot and an airline pilot, dude has no time.

mark has been on a mission to clean up all his bmw parts and get organized and clean.

jt came in with one of his cronies that was at fuel cleveland with him. jt gave him a tour of the skidmark and soulcraft (jt is a member of both).

thankfully, jim was here this morning to help me ("help" is the wrong word...he did ALL the work) troubleshoot the reznor that wasn't working. turns out there are two hard-to-find switches inside it that shut it off if the temperature gets too hot. i had changed the thermocouple and done all kinds of fiddling, but he knew what was really up. thank zeus. now i have 7 heaters, all working, all on. this place is a balmy 50 degrees inside.

maybe now i can focus a little more on listing some rando parts online and make a few hundred extra bucks a month to pay some bills.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-29256443808107384762018-01-11T17:25:00.000-08:002018-01-11T17:25:23.744-08:00decent day in the garage, today. warm enough that i turned all the heat off. some people were riding, today. dave nolan rode in, actually. got a new member (wife bought a guy a 1 month gift certificate). marty and son jordan are here working on their quad. jordan (big jordan) is here working on his IMS show bike. dave nolan tooled around with his hardley and pj spent most of the day here with his teeny little suzuki thing. al was here playing with that crazy goldwing. had a call with scott at h garage. ellen from the slovenian parade brought a friend in to see the place. got a little bit cleaned up here and there. got a haircut. shipped the parts that jada removed from the harley frame.

still overwhelmed and underfunded, but at least i was kept busy enough to not dwell on the bullshit.

i'm not happy with the vaporblaster. when it works, it works ok at best. when it doesn't work, i get pretty damned annoyed. that thing cost a small fortune. and for that dough, it should wipe my ass. it all too often has trouble with the window squirters, the water recirculation pump goes ape-shit far too often, and their customer service is severely lacking... for that kind of money, we shouldn't have to continually monitor and make adjustments. had we paid a grand for it, i'd be a little more understanding of how much work must be put into it to work properly. but we paid WAY more than a grand.

why the hell can't i simply create a gift certificate? why should that take more than 2 minutes to google and 5 minutes to make? instead, i've wasted 20 minutes searching and no time making. all the sudden i feel totally incompetent and wanna go to sleep.

hopefully can do something helpful with h garage and the kentucky kickdown. i wish i had enough dough to sponsor shit, but i have zip. the most i can do is be present and help promote online. but that's not shit. i wanna do more.

connected with the woman that runs the women's build show that lucky wheels is hosting this weekend. i'm hoping that after the madness of it passes, we can discuss maybe having that show travel around to all the CMGs or something cool. at the very least, i want her to have a similar show in skidmark.

head is spinning. gotta get out of here. i'm suddenly accomplishing nothing.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-55804225812873222982018-01-10T15:10:00.001-08:002018-01-10T15:10:26.667-08:00jada's been here working since 2. she's swept, cleaned, organized, and is now removing the forward controls and rear brake from an old shovelhead to ship out. love that girl.

jesse's been hanging out all day. haven't seen him in a month or two. looks like he may crash here for a few nights. he's going through a rough spell. i'm happy to help him out as long as he can keep his shit together.

tunes are blaring, jordan in wrenching, i'm cleaning... the place is looking great. got one more heater up and running in the lounge, the weather is above 6 degrees and the garage is warm. jordan is working in a t-shirt.

ron came in to do some quick welding for tim. alex from psi came in to make sure things were in line for the IMS show. dude's snowmobile broke down while riding across lake erie last week. he set up an ice fishing thing out there and fucking fished. he said the ice was almost 18 inches thick. fuck. that.

so i'll be on the progressive stage 7 times during the IMS show. i get 30 minutes each time to pimp out the garage. making a powerpoint right now. derek from thunder roads is hooking me up with a 10x10 booth, too. thanks zeus! otherwise i'd be wandering around all day. there's no possible WAY i could afford to have a booth at the IMS show. simply too expensive. insane. he saved my ass.

making fliers, ordered a few t-shirts, hopefully i can get stickers (but i doubt it). now i gotta submit a guest list to the progressive people. so i'm coordinating which members will be around for stage interviews on what days, etc...

al said he's coming in tomorrow to finish his goldwing - which i think i'll be bringing to the IMS show as a display piece. it's pretty fucking cool. pj said he's coming in, too.

the afterparty is happening here friday night after the IMS show. it's invite only, so i can't imagine there being more than 60 people here, but we'll see how many najar brings in. that dude rules. he's really wanting to help this place succeed.

tim and janeen really helped spark the office clean-up. it was looking like a full-on hoarder was shacking up in here. now it's WAY better, although not done. those two come in here and just knock shit out sometimes. i love them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-84833064950889445122018-01-08T16:23:00.000-08:002018-01-08T16:23:09.336-08:00jordan is here tinkering with is IMS build - the cb750a. he just keeps creating new little things for it. that means, of course, dave continues to have more powder coating to do. but he's actually making lots of things for this bike rather than buying them. and some parts he's just finding laying around skidmark and customizing them.

sean is also here working on his triumph. it's monday. he's always here on monday and friday. -although this weekend he was also here on saturday, which is out of the ordinary. he doesn't have too much left.

i installed one more radiant heater over the lounge, aimed at the bar. piped it, but am missing one 90 degree elbow to complete it. then i'll do the pseudo wiring to get some heat in there for a while before i hardwire all the heaters. having the heat takes priority over the many hours of scavenging wire and conduit to reuse to hardwire all that shit.

i can't go get the elbow today because the truck broke down last night. apparently, the fuel pump took a dump. died on 77, coasted onto grant ave, got a tow to flash from a kind gentleman that happened to be at the bp and needed a few extra bucks.

so i should get it back tomorrow, buy and install the elbow, and then hopefully get the other gas valve that i fried so i can install the last heater (also over the lounge). this shit needs to be up and running well by the IMS show because that after-party is happening here that friday night.

making the powerpoint thing and laying out my talking points right now. molly is working on a flier to pass out at the ims show. wilson is updating the website with new pics.

i toyed with the idea of raising my rates, but was talked out of it. when i discuss my rates with people, they almost always say i need to charge more. accountants, members, non members, riders, non riders... they all say the same thing. since it's getting tougher and tougher to stay in business, and the price has seemingly nothing to do with the amount of members i have, i figured it couldn't hurt. but my two most trusted advisors both said i am crazy. so i'm keeping my current rates for a while. maybe once people are beating down my doors i'll raise them. maybe not...

brought in another possible welding instructor, today. he comes from a long line of welders in the cleveland area. he should be an asset. getting ready to talk with all 3 instructors, figure out who has what dates, who can be a back-up, and starting to get people registered.

craig rodsmith has been getting TONS of attention, lately. he's fucking killing it! he, justin webster, and josh allison are all beating serious motorcycle ass. can't believe i met all those dudes. i hope i get to see rodsmith's place when we go to the mama tried show. that silly tv show did nothing else but introduce me to some rad builders, and they've all been very kind to me.

the mutt is turning 12 on wednesday. freaks me out. when she goes, i'm gonna have a rough go of life for a while. not looking forward to it. and not getting another dog if i can help it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-46262935209499635172018-01-06T15:27:00.001-08:002018-01-06T15:27:48.452-08:00dude. it's cold. some poor fellow from minnesota came in for some hourly membership time to fix the drive shaft on his truck as he was passing through from the east coast. dave nolan was here to help him along. as sick as he is, he laid on his back in the snow to help this guy for about 30 minutes. nolan never ceases to amaze me.

marty and his son, jordan, came in last night as i was leaving to split the case on their quad. they brought pizza, got online, and had at it. i had to order some special tools for them to do their job, but i was only too happy to buy that stuff just to see a kid and his dad working on shit together.

thomas is back. he's replacing the rings on his pistons. after a rush song played, nolan had some unpleasantries to share with us about rush. thomas was possibly as offended as i was being a maple head and all.

jt was here and really got his seat cowl looking killer. more banging with the hammer on the angle iron i welded to the table. can't believe how good it looks.

sean was in playing with the battery box thing he's making for his triumph chopper. he'll be back monday. today was a surprise visit. he's generally a friday and monday guy.

dave smith came by to have a beer and kill time before an appt.

the heat is working well in here. most of the area that people are working in is above 50 degrees. can't wait to see the bill...

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-76787994798964644152018-01-05T14:27:00.000-08:002018-01-05T14:27:01.281-08:00it's 8 outside. it's 50 inside skidmark garage. there's no way that would be possible without the help of one dave nolan and his ridiculously kind donations in the form of two reznor heaters. sadly, that fucker is a little bit under the weather and hasn't been in all week.

jt is here banging away on his seat cowl. i "tack welded" some angle iron onto the sweet welding table that jim mcnaughton and mark adams built for the garage. it was the first weld i've ever tried. the angle irons are in place! i banged on them with a hammer and they didn't budge. of course, i did more than tack...i ran a few inches of a bead on both sides because the little tack didn't seem like it did shit. they're bad. they look like i was standing on a bar of soap as i ran the bead.

sean harris was in a few times this morning and afternoon. he ran to bcf and talked with larry and came back to screw around some more.

jada came in an hour late and worked her shift. place always looks better after she's been here.

thomas was in last night. he and mark worked on his stuck bolt till pretty late. eventually, they had to drill it out and tap the hole. can't believe it came to that. what a pain. but thomas just takes it all in stride. nothing rattles that dude. he rules.

poison just got played on pandora. i'm disgusted. i gotta scroll through that in a minute and give that shit a fat thumb's down. at least tom waits is playing, now. skidmark is redeemed.

gotta bail early today. spent most of the day trying to configure the security cameras. still have more to do. but i got some of the time consuming tedious shit out of the way.

gotta send out the invites for the IMS after party.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-84152526666536377802018-01-04T20:36:00.002-08:002018-01-04T20:36:26.440-08:00bought the lower anvils for the english wheel at eastwood, today. $150. it seems more and more skidmark members wanna try it out. jt spends a fair amount of time watching a guy named lazze on youtube. this dude is a madman. it's really inspiring to watch this guy manipulate aluminum. jt is super pumped about making a bunch of shit for his harley.

thomas is in at the moment. the engine on his kz550 is apart, but the lower half is still in the frame. he decided to refresh all his gaskets as he had some seepage all summer. he removed all the gaskets with one of those sweet scotchbrite pads that go on the electric drill. those things make such short work of stubborn gaskets. but he did break a bolt when he was taking the cylinders off and spent the last few hours dealing with it. it's been soaking in penetrating oil for a week. he heated it, banged it, soaked it, banged it... eventually he put the head on the drill press and slowly drilled it out. now he's gonna tap it. i think he'll have to helicoil it...but i dunno.

mark got his ohio license and plates for his truck today. changing his california plates, he admitted, was surprisingly emotional. i couldn't help but laugh...even though i totally understood what he was going through.

all the heaters that are hanging are running. i hope to have two more heaters up above the lounge by monday. we'll see. putting enough rubles together these days is tough. not sure how smart my english wheel anvils purchase was.

jt said he has friends that wanna come in and join. man i hope that happens. so need a few more members.

getting down to 2, tonight. i think i'm gonna be ok as far as pipes go. the air compressor that was squeaking like crazy was due to belts being...what?...too tight? i sprayed some penetrating oil in there and it fixed it immediately. crazy. and lucky.

wheeler stopped in today for the first time in a week or two. good to see him. i love getting him on a roll about something. he cracks me up.

fucking pj stopped in and worked on his savage, today! couldn't believe it. haven't seem him work in here in a while. his job has kept him away. we moved his bike from the bay by the shitter over to bay number 8. as soon as we started rolling it over, he got the itch to start fucking with it. it was really good to have him back.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-4350720973665178982018-01-04T09:52:00.000-08:002018-01-04T09:52:13.604-08:00thursday the fourth of january. it's biting cold outside. getting down to about 2 today and not looking good for the next few days. i haven't turned my heat off in about a week. i just installed another reznor last night. this place is bearable. still need to wear a sweat shirt, though. i'm not shooting for shorts and t-shirts. who the hell has money for that kind of heat...

jordan is plugging away at his ims show build. he still fabricates new things here and there this late in the game. it's pretty impressive to watch him just figure shit out. he made his own seat, yesterday. he's not thrilled with it, so he's just gonna make another i guess.

jt was here helping him and learning from him last night, too.

i am picking up new english wheel anvils from eastwood today, speaking of jt. kuzma came in here last weekend and we played around with the english wheel for a few hours. we beat the metal with the hammers on the sandbags, ran it through the wheel, used the press brake, ran it through the planishing hammer...it was REALLY fun. rather addicting. jt said he's gonna get his hands on a bunch of scrap metal sheets. i can't wait to play around with that thing some more. would love to make a fender or something simple.

it'd be rad to have a class where the attendees got to use and get an intro lesson on: the tube bender, the hammer and bag, the press brake, the english wheel, the planishing hammer, the plasma cutter, and a welder. there'd be no mastering of anything, rather everyone gets a taste of how each functions. and in the end, something is created from that bent tube and manipulated metal sheet. maybe during fuel?!

still in need of some more memberships here. now that i only have two more heaters to hang, i can start to get my head around ebay-ing some parts to make a few extra bucks.

security system is up and running and watchable from my phone. it's so rad. two cameras outside that are totally functioning in this cold and six inside. i can see everything. and the motion detection is incredible.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-90367162929863514282018-01-04T09:51:00.001-08:002018-01-04T09:51:59.096-08:00it's christmas eve eve. people have vacated. my security system is finally about 90% good. i have a few more tweaks, but it's RAD. i can watch all 8 cameras on my phone. and the motion detection is adjustable...so cool. i like seeing what's going on outside.

jt was in most of the day shaping the seat cowl for his harley with the planishing hammer and body hammers. dave smith came in and gave him some helpful hints. i can't believe how gung-ho jt is, man. it's so cool to watch him learning all this shit. it's inspiring. i'd like to someday have a class here. it'd be tough with only one english wheel and one planishing hammer, but i think it could still happen.

still need to run a gas line to the smaller reznor and wire it up. but tim and i vented it. i have a leak on the large reznor so i have to take that gas line apart AGAIN. fuck. that needs hard-wired, too. then i need to put on or two up in the lounge and i'll be done with fucking heating shit. what a pain. i should have started this process a month before i did, though. typical procrastinator...

alex from psi came in for a bit yesterday. i can't wait for him to get working on his water buffalo. i think dave will be painting it, too. it should be interesting to see how much alex gets done being that he is a talker. great dude, great teacher, wealth of knowledge...but he always wants to teach. i'm thinking that will impede his progress on his water buffalo. we'll see. it's gonna be rad.

muhktar said he's gonna start coming in to work on his bike that's been in storage for a few months. should be good to have some fresh blood in here to mix it up a bit.

jt's buddy have me a neon miller high life sign last week. it makes the bar look REALLY cool. can't believe i actually own one. i've always wanted a neon beer sign. hasn't every man?

mark has been working up in AO more than he works down here. it's warmer up there. i can't blame him. it's quieter and a better environment for getting computer work done. but it's weird not having him here 24/7.

i'm not coming back here till the 26th. gonna be strange. but probably good. i don't know how, but they say it'll be good to be away for a few days. sounds like bullshit to me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-60921345878256080722018-01-04T09:51:00.000-08:002018-01-04T09:51:23.680-08:00was on a podcast yesterday with progressive pat jansen. he asked some good questions and really seemed to have a grasp on exactly what a cmg is and how it functions. kinda refreshing to field questions from someone that actually gets it.

dave nolan finally made his way back into the garage, today. so good to see that guy. all he wanted to do today was help around the garage. he was in a great mood. stank the place up with his cigars and made me laugh all day.

tim came in and we cut a hole in the roof to vent out one of the reznor heaters that dave so graciously donated. what a fuckin project... i knew i was putting it off for a reason. thank zeus tim was around to see the task through. now i just gotta wire it up and run gas to it.

we started to do the same to the other reznor, and tim smelled gas. he found a tiny leak. this is one of the pipes that jim and i wrestled with for an hour or two trying to eliminate the many leaks. fact is...i just suck at running pipe. can't wait to take that damned thing all apart again and get pipe dope all over my clothes and hands. it washes off SO easily!

trying to plan more welding classes for 2018. hope to have one a month on a solid schedule.

marc bouchet left for chicago today. he took his 71 bmw with him. this is the 2nd or 3rd time he's left cleveland for home. hope he comes back to at least visit. hopefully he shows up on his bike this summer. that thing needs to run. it's just too cool.

jordan continues to plug away at his ims show bike. he's made some parts with the english wheel, welded a bunch of stuff, powder coated and painted a bunch of things... i'm excited to see what it'll look like when he's all done.

kevin dunworth, of loaded gun customs, had a gnarly flat track wreck recently. -not as bad as greg boyd's crash, but bad none-the-less. he's apparently needing some help with making ends meet cuz he's selling his builds and rides and trying his damnedest to keep his head up. not much i can do for the guy but offer kind words. i'd like to go visit him, though. maybe i'll see him at mama tried or something.

al came in today to fuck around with his wing a little and dropped off 6 haynes manuals and a clock with the skidmark garage script on it! what a guy. fucking love that kind of spirit in here.

so thrilled with how the culture of this garage has grown. it's EXACTLY as i always hoped it'd be. everyone contributes, everyone is kind to one another, everyone is accepted, nobody is douchey... i love to hear about members contacting each other outside the garage to hang out or ride together. i wish the success of the culture had a direct and immediate relationship with being able to pay the bills, though. that's a continual challenge. if it wasn't for bear at old bike barn and his corporate sponsorship, i don't know how i'd be making ends meet. he stepped in at the 12th hour and saved my ass.

i gotta start spending time putting parts on ebay. it's gonna bring in that extra one or two hundred bucks a month that will REALLY help, right now. short of gaining another few members super fast, it's the fastest way to get a few bucks. but there's still so much infrastructure to deal with, that i just can't dedicate the time. will the upgrades and building maintenance ever fucking stop?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-73399497127750068552017-12-19T11:25:00.000-08:002017-12-19T11:25:30.804-08:00membership is up to around 25 active members (active meaning paying and actually using the space for what it's meant). it hovered around 15 for about a year till the fall approached. then it jumped. it's been really fun these last couple months. people are forming their own friendships and helping each other non-stop. it's pretty rad to see in person what i always believed would happen on its own.

jordan has been coming in every other day at least. he's gonna put that cb750a in the IMS show. shawn has been diligently plugging away at his 65 triumph chopper. he split the case, took every last thing apart...he's been getting help from bcs in kirtland. jt is teaching himself how to use the english wheel - and his buddy, tom, came in today and donated a neon miller high life sign. it's so cool. dave nolan has been on vacation for a minute, so i haven't seen him for at least a week - and that's weird because he was coming in almost everyday for a few months. pj can rarely make it in anymore. that sucks, because he really knows how to help so many people. karl finally brought in his shovel and took it all apart. elliot is in love and hasn't been coming in much for the last few months. marc's old bmw gets about 2% of the attention it deserves. he's just so busy with school. i love that bike. ethan hasn't been in in months, but hopes to return after the holidays. dorjan and his wife sue recommended a guy named marty bring his son in to work on a quad engine. pretty cool to see another father/son combo. al's goldwing is sick as fuck. he put a skidmark logo on the side cover, too. it sounds SO mean. he's a nut. he said he'd get mine running when he's done, too! pumped! kix hasn't been back in a few weeks, unfortunately. probably won't see her till after the holidays. eisenberg had some sad family shit happen to him a month ago and won't be back for a bit. dude's had it rough the last few months. pelton is basically just storing his wing here. i think he's actually finished everything he had planned. that's pretty rare around here. he's thinking of getting another project. rod's thumb is finally healing and he'll start back on his wing any day. castillo doesn't come around nearly enough. but he did the other day...with a new electric minibike he bought at home depot. dude's funny. reinhardt hasn't been back in a few weeks, either. he's great to have around - he's really smart. alex has parts of his water buffalo here, but has yet to do anything with it. thomas hayes is the shit. he fixes ALL electrical. he's a really good guy that just wants to wrench and help people. fucking canadians are the shit. jr finished his bmw but plans on bringing back another one. he actually dropped off a christmas gift for me the other day. apparently he is/was an alpaca farmer. who knew? karas has been here twice. he's a tough nut to crack. begg moved to ca after getting her bike to run. sass has actually been coming in on the regular for the past few weeks. i think he might actually get his bike done by summer. mark adams hasn't touched his bmws at all in weeks. he's just trying to figure shit out before he dives back into them. jarred is just storing his wing here, not working on it. wilson hasn't touched his xs since he bought a new yamaha in the summer. keegan's xs sits collecting dust, too. ben weinstein talked about coming in to work on his rockets, but he hasn't yet. he should be an interesting addition to the garage. tatsumi left for co to chase a girl. that sucks. he's fun to have around. his buddy marc won't come in to do any work if tat is gone. that also sucks.

gonna speak up on the progressive stage at the IMS show this year. 7 times in three days. gonna highlight the members and the work they're doing to their scoots. maybe get some local businesses up there that have been kind to skidmark and let them pimp their shit. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-38919477008969571692016-02-01T08:19:00.002-08:002016-02-01T08:19:24.033-08:00went to the ix center for the progressive international motorcycle show this weekend. couldn't afford the grand for a 10x10 space, so tim, wilson, wheeler, and i snuck in a bunch of skidmark postcards and just randomly left them around. don't think it did any good. but it was fun.

met dustin kott. he actually spoke with me for a good 30 minutes. really nice guy. totally regular dude that just happens to be a killer builder. asked him if he had been contacted to do the show. i am getting the feeling that all the best builders are being contacted quite regularly about doing shows, cuz all their responses hint toward not being sure if my show was one that called. "did you say discovery, or history, or esquire?" is what i have heard more than once. hopefully, we get our show on first.

ridin'on put the garage on the cover. nice little story inside, too. molly took all the pics, and she was kinda pumped to see her name in print, again. hope it drums up some biz. i guess thunder roads is pissed that they didn't get the story. in truth, i wasn't supposed to tell ridin'on anything, but coolfire took so long to get back to me about what i am and am not allowed to say, that i had no direction for the interview. so i said the truth. when esquire sees it, they're not gonna be happy. but fuck it. should've told me ahead of time what rules i had to follow.

not many members coming in to do work, these days. running out of room, too. mclovin is moving to israel and we gotta do something with his bikes. saw red at the show - his jaw is no longer wired shut, rather it is rubber banded shut. poor fucker. haven't seen his ass in months.

got to talk to phil at poc for quite a while at the show. he's always a wealth of information. glad we got to hang for a while. he has great insights and suggestions for how to proceed with this, that, and the other. i hope he can do a build on the show.

the shop is a TOTAL mess - due mainly to dani and mouth doing fuck tons of work and not putting shit back. it drives me nuts. but i think it'll take care of itself here very quickly when the show gets to filming in a few weeks.

tim and dani have been actively looking for bikes for the show. i like seeing tim with some responsibility in the show. they'll be paying him, too. got his ass a phone, finally. i can see a sense of importance in his stride. call me crazy, but i swear he stands taller.

haven't had a smoke since xmas eve. i feel no different, sadly. thought it'd make me feel so much better... thankfully, even all the smoke happening around me at almost all times, i don't feel the want too strongly.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-76257571040706113532015-09-02T11:26:00.001-07:002015-09-02T11:26:32.751-07:00hurley came in and finished the most badass wall mural i've ever seen. he finished friday night at like 1am. the film crew came in at 8:30 the next morning. he's an artistic genius. totally mindblowing.

halliday and his crew showed up saturday morning and spent the day just getting shots of the garage and how it operates and general hijinx. it was a stressful day for me. i did not come off too well on camera. after the crew left, a bunch of us hung around till probably 1 or 2am. pete brown, davison, and debelak spent a considerable amount of time and energy talking me into being more energetic and let myself just enjoy it for sunday's shooting. i took their words to heart.

i was mostly spent when i arrived late sunday morning. i had to immediately perform. i slammed a 5 hour, some coffee, a pain-killer for my aching back, and then threw about 4 shots of crown into another cup of coffee. the rest of the day was a cake walk for me. it was mostly filming the teams doing their fake builds for the pitch-tape. i got to chill for most of the day till 8pm rolled around.

at 8, we started filming the grand reveal of the bikes and had a crowd of a bit less than 100 people. i had to walk out to them all screaming, welcome them, and call out the bikes. UB and john pflueger were the judges. the film crew all said i killed it. they were very happy with me compared to the day before.

monday, they did interviews with dani and i. one together, and then we each went at alone. i thought it'd be way quicker than it was. it was a solid hour or two with both of us, and then another hour or two with just me. but they loved it.

it took till this morning (wednesday) for me to fully recover and not be a zombie. the weekend was nutzo, but successful, i think.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-19295037700089314462015-08-26T10:19:00.000-07:002015-08-26T10:19:09.838-07:00went camping last weekend, and after i left friday night for greer, i was notified that sarah's bike started. mike is possibly the best addition to this garage, yet. he takes whatever time he has and spends it with anyone that needs assistance. he's good at explaining things in a way that don't make anyone feel dumb. he spent a lot of time with sarah and it's obvious how sincerely he wants to help others. dani helped, and so did tim. it was definitely a team effort - and this thing starting was a long time coming. it truly made my weekend to get that text from dani saying the bike was running.

dani and sarah rode up and down walton for a few minutes at about 5:30 on saturday. as they were putting the bikes back into the garage, bill came over quite angry about how loud the bikes are and how fast they were going. he said 3 neighbors had called him complaining saying they were gonna call the cops. sarah was not going fast, and i'm sure dani wasn't either (although he usually does), but both bikes are extremely loud. my guess is nobody called bill, he was just pissed about everything in general.

the previous saturday, he laid into tim for parking in front of my garage door before i arrived. scolded him quite shittily. didn't matter that i had told tim to park there if my truck wasn't there so that the spot is saved for when i arrive - i'd rather get him to move than search the building over for a person i don't know that parked there. bill scolded him again a few hours later; peter had to step in and ask bill to chill. wtf. and earlier that morning, bill had to fire the electrician, dave, for lying to him about permits and such. moments ago, bill raised his voice to tim, cussed him out (!!!!!), and ordered him to move his van because it was blocking rising star's spot or someshit. -even though bill will be the first person to tell me that nobody has their own spots... bill's on a rampage for some reason, and it's mostly about petty shit.

so dani brought in two dudes to help him catch up, cuz he has more bikes in here than he can handle. it's getting overwhelming and by all appearances he's taking over the garage. mouth went through psi and is a harley mechanic by night. mike is a dude that just really wants to turn wrenches for no other reason than the soul-filling feeling he gets from it. he paid me for a month without me asking and without him even having a bike that needed work. he just wants to get dirty and help people. he is the quintessential member. he sees this as therapy. he did 70% of the work on terry's suzuki (carbs were all effed up and a REAL pain to deal with), so i gave him half the $200 i got from terry. i'd like to keep collecting membership fees from him AND paying him when he adds significant value to my garage.

mouth earns his namesake. he's almost too much, sometimes. he keeps calling me over to look at stuff - not cuz i can offer advice or help - so he can just talk more. it's tough to get things done. i don't know how he gets anything done. nicest dude ever, though. i think he will be a decent addition to the garage. he said he has more than a few tools (lifts, even) that he'll contribute to the garage - which i told him i'd take off his membership fees.

scotty bought a 6 month membership and the basketcase goldwing about a month ago and came in monday night to do a general inventory on it so he knows what's missing. the guy i bought it from in columbus told me a month or so afterward that he forgot to give me one more box of parts for it. and scotty and i figured out that we're missing the top of the triple tree, the radiator, the front wheel doesn't look correct, and a few other odds and ends. and this jim dude moved to colorado or someshit and was supposed to leave the box of shit with his neighbor. but jim won't get back to me. hope his number is still valid. gonna have to call his ass soon. texting just isn't cutting it with him, anymore.

joe sass has his cb750 completely disassembled and had to keep his virago here for a few weeks cuz the carbs were fucked up. gas was literally shooting out his exhaust pipe as he went to leave on it one day. he can't get here much cuz he has two jobs, so it sat for quite a while. i didn't record exactly when that was, though. so i don't know how many days for which to charge him. i feel like it was a month, but it may have been less.

sohail owns a gym in univ hts and had me get his cb360 and his wife's vespa. dani is gonna work on his vespa, and sohail finally came in to work on his 360 monday night. mike helped him out tremendously. sohail told me straight up that he doesn't know the first thing about doing mechanical work. he's such a nice guy. he's gonna write up a good press release for me. hopefully, we get to working on it soon.

had a crain's interview a few weeks ago - with a photoshoot - and the published article was KILLER. got me a fair amount of phone calls. had another crain's interview yesterday for a woman that is writing a story about maker spaces and their business plans. it was kinda cool, although i did not sound too intelligent about how i went about opening this place.

had an interview with cleveland magazine? last week, too. but it was more about the new businesses that have opened in the hildebrandt building. this reminds me, i gotta contact the freshwater guy about his progress with the atlantic monthly article.

ran into a major roadblock with hake's cb500. mike put the jugs on and one piston is stuck inside the cylinder, somehow. thinking a ring got tweaked and bent inbetween the piston and cylinder wall. if that's the case, that's a fair amount of money (new rings, new piston?, possible boring of cylinders - which means ALL new pistons and new rings, but at the very least probably another honing of the cylinders. fucking sucks. i wish i had the time to do it myself, but i asked mike to tackle it. i can't get irritated with him for this happening. live and learn. i know he learned from it. so fuck it. i just feel horrible for hake. i think i'm just gonna have to give him his money back, actually.

the tv show is coming this weekend to film the pitch-tape. halliday is coming with them, thankfully. and davison will be up, also. we're gonna fake two builds with a few parts bikes and then show them riding out on TOTALLY different bikes to much fanfare in the courtyard late sunday night. don't know what to expect, but i'm freaking out.

dani is convinced he's gonna open a triumph dealership here. he met with the triumph peeps last week and had investors take a gander at things today. i want no part of it. for one, i don't think it's gonna happen so i don't want to waste any energy stressing about it, and two, even if it does happen, i don't want the stress of running it. i can barely handle what i have going on in my life as it is. if it wasn't for molly vaughan taking care of my personal life, i'd be mostly unable to handle things.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-51876455906998689142015-07-23T09:15:00.000-07:002015-07-23T09:15:06.451-07:00sarah came in last night while i was gone. thankfully, dani was here to help her. when i came back, he had just left. they somehow got her exhaust pieces separated - which i was unable to accomplish. i was afraid of breaking shit. she started stripping the paint off her tank, too.

i kinda feel guilty with sarah. i kinda feel like i got her in over her head - i think she's feeling overwhelmed and maybe panicking. she confessed she doesn't know what she's doing. her and dani got the carbs together, so i think we can start attempting to get it running. i think that will make her feel better. it'll make me happy to see it running. i hope she doesn't end up resenting me and thinking i pushed her into something she was not prepared to deal with. i know it'll all be good in the end, but since this is her first foray into this madness, she might not see that light, yet - hence her anxiousness. i get it.

how do i avoid this, next time? how do i set proper expectations for the next person that falls into this same situation? i know i told sarah that it was gonna take her at least a month of playing around to get it going, but just saying it like that is obviously not stressing that reality enough. but i don't wanna stress it so much that i scare anyone away from doing something so damned rewarding, either.

geoff stopped in this morning! a great surprise! he dropped off the carbs for his cb350 and plans on coming in next week to do some jetting and testing. can't wait - he's creative as fuck and a blast to have around.

the flies in this place are DRIVING ME CRAZY. the sticky strips don't seem to be enough. i gotta get some legit fly shit from home depot.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-80564978837009245382015-07-22T13:58:00.000-07:002015-07-22T13:58:02.135-07:00zuba grabbed my truck and took his bike (formally an out-of-stater) to the bmv for the VIN inspection. after a few hours in line, he was finally victorious. he's new york bound in only a few days, i think. sucks for the garage, but good for him.

i'm picking up sohail's cb360 friday morning - he just let me know he's ready to join. pumped. seems like a super nice dude.

wilson brought in his xs650 today to do some charging system tests. he can't seem to get enough power to the starter for it to work, properly. and his turn signals will cease to work halfway into a ride. that thing is so nice looking, i can't stand it. quite jealous of my friend, actually. and it's cool to see him learning how to fix shit on his own. wish he lived closer so he could be here more often.

dani is on his way over for the call with the tv production company. this should be interesting. it's being referred to as a creative call - so i'm thinking we're gonna discuss ideas that will be shopped to the networks. it's in 8 minutes...and i gotta take a dump. i'd never make it out in 8 minutes. gonna have to clench for a while, i guess.

i wish geoff would come back to work on his cb175 and cb350. he designed my killer logo and came in once to play around with his stuff and hasn't made it back, yet. dude's a riot.

tim is hopefully gonna buy geoff's other cb175 and work on getting it road-worthy with his son, tyler. that bike is SO damned cool. i was kinda hoping nobody would want it so i could buy it from geoff and restore it, myself. so funny that it has a big windshield on it... quite rusty, but really, really cool.

3 minutes... really gotta poop.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-68472270965254894842015-07-21T12:01:00.000-07:002015-07-21T12:01:07.196-07:00amid my current, and hopefully short, bout of pessimism and doubt about this place, came some positive encouragement from a close friend. "be patient. you knew this wouldn't be easy." lo and behold, a total stranger strolled in this morning after reading about disowned customs and skidmark garage. he has an old cb360 that he wants to get running - and even more he wants to learn and have help. i told him the current pricing structure, adding that there is an hourly rate for dani's help and also for mine (if he wants someone standing over his shoulder for extended periods of time. he was all in. totally not phased by the costs (of which i'm terrified to share with people). he LOVED the place and i will hopefully be picking up his bike at his house this friday. the dude owns a gym - he was of formidable size. definitely too tall for a 360, and was asking about buying one of the 750s in my possession. i'd sell him mine, i think. but i'd have to get it running, first. maybe i can do that over the winter.

but another new member! i'm really excited. word is leaking out - i just need to bust open that hole so the dripping leak becomes a torrent.

zuba is having difficulty getting his cb750 titled, registered, etc... looks like he'll have to borrow the truck to bring it to some government office, tomorrow.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-82552478841851557372015-07-20T19:18:00.001-07:002015-07-20T19:18:36.934-07:00busy day at the garage, today. marketing machine dani scored us an interview with crain's cleveland business. super nice woman named rachel came and hung out at the garage for about an hour listening to us babble on about shit that she probably didn't care about. she was extremely gracious and if she truly didn't care, she fooled my ass. she asked some cool questions that really enabled me to explain my passion for this dream. i came out of that feeling pretty good. i hope dani did, as well. he's got a great story to tell, and i think much of it will be told in rachel's article. they're coming back next wednesday to do a photo shoot and hopefully even talk to some of the members. it'd be fantastic if every member could be here for it, but that's not realistic. i've gotta take what i can get.

but to me, crain's cleveland business is THE write up. it alone almost makes me believe that this is actually gonna work, cuz i'm having my doubts. it seems the addition of dani to skidmark is precisely what was needed. he's a social media madman and has tons of connections that he'd never had the opportunity to take advantage of when he was working out of his driveway. so he's getting in contact with all these people that showed massive interest in the recent past. really, if he'll let me ride his coattails for a few months, i think it'd be enough to get the word out for real - and connect with my demographic. but it's all so exciting that i'm super anxious and my nervous shits have resurfaced for the first time in a LONG time. for the first time since january, i don't feel like i'm in control. in the distant past, this would have subconsciously pushed me to get a tattoo. but fuck that shit.

dani was here all day (he often is on mondays) and worked on at least 4 different bikes by the time he left. he took el chapo out for its maiden voyage and we found him pushing it back up the driveway after a few minutes. we all smelled something burning. i truly feel like it's the brand new paint on the engine. or maybe it's the brand new brakes? but it was strong enough to make any rider turn the damned thing off. MAN does it sound badass. sounds WAY cooler than i thought a 400 could sound. it's a beautiful bike with an interesting story - which i won't get into. hopefully just making note of it will cause us to never forget the story. the first bobber he worked on here came back tonight cuz the fender was starting to rub on the tire or something. so he had to deal with that. AND this is soon after he picked up his cousin and that kid's new/old 1980 xj550. dani spent a lot of time cleaning pretty dirty carbs and then we wrestled the bank of carbs back in - holy shit that sucked. the air cleaner is NOT REMOVABLE unless you take the exhaust off, take out the front engine mount bolts, and then tilt the engine forward/down! that's absurd. so we truly had to wrestle those things in. we had to use a come-along!! wtf! dani and his cousin got it started and it seemed to run alright. i dunno. and then bruce came in and dani did some quick welding on his harley frame. this was followed by helping zuba get his cb750 running. -which WAS running previous to tonight. nothing a squirt of starter fluid in the air intake won't fix. started and ran like it was new. great sound to it, too. it's only headers, i think.

wilson came over - first trip on the freeway for him. his bike is so gorgeous. he ran out of gas and didn't know that's why the bike was stalling till he pulled over and opened the tank. so he threw it on reserve and rode to a gas station. but he went through the same thoughts i always do, "is the wind slowing me down more than normal? am i running out of gas? should i throw it on reserve? should i now put it back to the ON position, cuz it doesn't really feel any different? or is it different? i can't tell." nich came to play with electricity some more. he's putting LEDs on in place of the turn signals. LED strips, mind you. and i must admit that it looks kinda cool.

i'm working on terry's suzuki. i can't get both cylinders to fire. i have to take effing carb off! this is gonna take FOREVER, and i have a feeling he's not gonna pay me for the time i'm spending. i'm not doing any more favors for neighbors like this. i tell them that i don't work on bikes, but it's like i'm not even saying anything. and since i melted the first battery, i'm gonna be out an additional 80 bucks at the get-go. damnit. lesson learned, don't guess when it comes to the battery; the terminal set up is on purpose; don't try to make a different set-up work. it doesn't.

looks like the cb500 rings and carb kit are gonna be here soon! dude, i can't WAIT to get that together and to hake. i'm such a douche for promising shit in any sort of timeline. i keep thinking i'm gonna finally be able to do something on a specific timeline and i continue to fail. piss me off. so assuming there's no other hurdles with it, i COULD have it together and ready in a few weeks. -why did i even say any of that?

so rachel made the comment about how affordable it is for someone to use the garage. and she stressed affordable. i just raised my prices a bit, and that's likely what she saw. frankly, i'm terrified to raise them, again.

good talk...good talk.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13615421661979940847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-907926083949997951.post-10904000997483942252015-07-20T11:50:00.000-07:002015-07-20T11:50:04.793-07:00a quick summary from january till july 19thit was suggested by another business owner that starting a diary of sorts would be beneficial. this seems as good a place as any to attempt something like this.

starting from the beginning...
i began moving into the hildebrandt building in early january of 2015. many friends and family assisted in the process of building the tool benches and bike benches, general set-up, and the tedious hanging of tools on the pegboards. but none helped more than wilson and shel. i owe a lifetime of gratitude to both for the sheer amount of hours of manual labor they put in.

by march, i announced (via facebook) that i was ready to start welcoming in customers to come work on their bikes. the first person to use my garage was fred. fred works as a handyman here at the building and had just bought an old school minibike (probably from the 70s) and a pocket-rocket. neither were running. i wasn't much help to fred, unfortunately. but then nickgyver, a guy that lived across the street and RODE ALL WINTER, came in to do some needed maintenance on his old kawasaki and he immediately took up the task of also helping out fred. his ability to solve problems in the true macgyver sense became evident quite quickly. it took a good month or so, but fred finally got his little bikes running (mostly for his kids), and nick has since moved to the other side of town. but nick has been back a few times to change tires (a disaster because his old kawi has those damned rim locks, with which neither of us had any experience). i didn't charge fred or nick for the time they spent in the garage. nick did throw me a 20 here and there without my asking, which was nice. and being that fred works here at the hildebrandt, he's done me countless favors and has more than paid for the time he spent here.

mark and amanda found me via facebook months and months before i actually opened. i had been talking about getting this garage open for quite a while, and he connected with me through a mutual friend. interestingly, mark has his own garage and his own tools and enough knowledge to do the work he came here to do. i believe he just wants to help support a local business that has interests similar to his own. we changed the tires on amanda's suzuki, changed the oil, bled the brakes, and surely a few other things that i don't remember. mark and amanda are my first membership buying customers that used the garage (i have a few VERY gracious friends that bought memberships at the onset mainly because they are good friends and want to see me succeed - but they have yet to come in and wrench on their bikes).

i had my official grand opening early may, and although 350 people were in attendance, it did not result in many new customers. i hired lauren to plan the event, and she hit a home-run. she will forever plan future events for me.

however, a few days before the grand opening, nich (pronounced nick) called me after stumbling across my website. he came to the grand opening and a week later i went to his house to pick up his 78 cb750 - the only bike i know inside and out, thankfully. nich is very much into knowledge, and he knows his shit regarding electricity. he removed and took apart just about everything on his bike save the engine. he paid me up front for a year membership and then some. he has religiously come to the garage at least two or three times a week since early may. he has learned how to do many tasks, and simultaneously taught me about electricity. he has brought his friends in with him to help, and has consistently offered to help anyone else working in the garage. his bike is running well and ready to go, but he wants to do little customizations here and there. so thankfully, he still comes in once or twice a week.

zuba called me one day and had me come to his flat to pick up two 30 year old cb750s. he lived on the 2nd or 3rd floor, so we had to roll them to the elevator, down a flight of stairs, and into my truck. he has been hanging out here making one solid rider out of two almost-solid bikes. the dude's an artist and has crazy vision and unique taste. he took the forks from one and put them on the other. he cleaned out and maybe even switched carbs. he installed a new chain and sprockets. he even chopped his seat to make it a single - hand sewing the back of the seat to complete it. he uses this space to make some of his art, beyond just working on the motorcycles - which i love. he bought a month up front, and then had to buy a second month when things didn't get finished as quickly as he had hoped. sadly, zuba is moving to new york in a few minutes - not sure when i'll see that cat again after he bails.

joe found me and brought in yet another cb750 - this time a 1975. he has dismantled the entire thing, down to bare frame, and is heading toward the restoration with minor modifications direction. we encountered stuck bolts like i've never experienced on a motorcycle. heat, hammers, and pb did zero for these. these were engine mount bolts, too. lots of dremel time and drilling time ensued. joe is an accountant and a bartender at a happening joint around the corner from the hildebrandt. he doesn't get the opportunity to spend time in here like he would prefer. but when he comes in, he goes to town. i may just buy him a dremel for his birthday. we got the valve cover off the top of the engine the other night. he's gonna take the frame to get powder-coated, soon. he bought a three month membership - and since he's a vet, he got a discount.

sarah cuts my hair and has been talking about getting a motorcycle for about a year. she got her temps and was holding off on buying a bike till a great deal came along. i found an old cm400 for 300 bucks and just transferred it over to her. she has taken much of it apart, cleaned, and de-spidered her bike. she's painting parts as she sees fit while she waits for the correct parts to arrive. sarah has big plans for the appearance of this perfect starter bike - i can't wait to see it when it's done. she bought a month, but it looks like she'll need to buy another. she is more than willing to get dirty and takes directions well. sarah also has two jobs, and can't get in here more than once or twice a week, but she is always down to stay super late, which fits perfectly with my schedule. she often doesn't leave till 2am on a school night.

by chance, i met dani of disowned customs working out of his driveway - and winning bike building awards while doing so. he took a look at the garage and decided to move his operation into skidmark - thank zeus. he has been here about a month and builds/welds/helps non-stop. he is a social media force and has gotten the two of us plenty of media attention. i hope he stays for a long time - or at least as long as he can before growing too large for skidmark. i'm not charging him dick for rent because he's so willing to help all the skidmark members, and also because having him here means i don't have to be here 18 hours a day. his presence is not quantifiable - how do i measure the fact that having him here allows me to have an iota of a social life? and it's not like he's drinking all my beer...

there have been a few other dudes that came in and paid by the hour to get some quick things taken care of - but because i was not keeping a "diary", i don't have their names. one was a rear shock change on harley as i was about to lock up for the night, the other was some carb work on a 72 cb350. both were fun and fast and i hope to see those guys, again.

the lounge has turned into exactly what i envisioned. guys from all over the building come here to chill and have a beer on a daily basis. but i think i will need to add more bays soon - effectively killing the lounge area. we'll see.
