it's 8 outside. it's 50 inside skidmark garage. there's no way that would be possible without the help of one dave nolan and his ridiculously kind donations in the form of two reznor heaters. sadly, that fucker is a little bit under the weather and hasn't been in all week.
jt is here banging away on his seat cowl. i "tack welded" some angle iron onto the sweet welding table that jim mcnaughton and mark adams built for the garage. it was the first weld i've ever tried. the angle irons are in place! i banged on them with a hammer and they didn't budge. of course, i did more than tack...i ran a few inches of a bead on both sides because the little tack didn't seem like it did shit. they're bad. they look like i was standing on a bar of soap as i ran the bead.
sean harris was in a few times this morning and afternoon. he ran to bcf and talked with larry and came back to screw around some more.
jada came in an hour late and worked her shift. place always looks better after she's been here.
thomas was in last night. he and mark worked on his stuck bolt till pretty late. eventually, they had to drill it out and tap the hole. can't believe it came to that. what a pain. but thomas just takes it all in stride. nothing rattles that dude. he rules.
poison just got played on pandora. i'm disgusted. i gotta scroll through that in a minute and give that shit a fat thumb's down. at least tom waits is playing, now. skidmark is redeemed.
gotta bail early today. spent most of the day trying to configure the security cameras. still have more to do. but i got some of the time consuming tedious shit out of the way.

bought the lower anvils for the english wheel at eastwood, today. $150. it seems more and more skidmark members wanna try it out. jt spends a fair amount of time watching a guy named lazze on youtube. this dude is a madman. it's really inspiring to watch this guy manipulate aluminum. jt is super pumped about making a bunch of shit for his harley.
thomas is in at the moment. the engine on his kz550 is apart, but the lower half is still in the frame. he decided to refresh all his gaskets as he had some seepage all summer. he removed all the gaskets with one of those sweet scotchbrite pads that go on the electric drill. those things make such short work of stubborn gaskets. but he did break a bolt when he was taking the cylinders off and spent the last few hours dealing with it. it's been soaking in penetrating oil for a week. he heated it, banged it, soaked it, banged it... eventually he put the head on the drill press and slowly drilled it out. now he's gonna tap it. i think he'll have to helicoil it...but i dunno.
mark got his ohio license and plates for his truck today. changing his california plates, he admitted, was surprisingly emotional. i couldn't help but laugh...even though i totally understood what he was going through.
all the heaters that are hanging are running. i hope to have two more heaters up above the lounge by monday. we'll see. putting enough rubles together these days is tough. not sure how smart my english wheel anvils purchase was.
jt said he has friends that wanna come in and join. man i hope that happens. so need a few more members.
getting down to 2, tonight. i think i'm gonna be ok as far as pipes go. the air compressor that was squeaking like crazy was due to belts being...what?...too tight? i sprayed some penetrating oil in there and it fixed it immediately. crazy. and lucky.
wheeler stopped in today for the first time in a week or two. good to see him. i love getting him on a roll about something. he cracks me up.

i am picking up new english wheel anvils from eastwood today, speaking of jt. kuzma came in here last weekend and we played around with the english wheel for a few hours. we beat the metal with the hammers on the sandbags, ran it through the wheel, used the press brake, ran it through the planishing hammer...it was REALLY fun. rather addicting. jt said he's gonna get his hands on a bunch of scrap metal sheets. i can't wait to play around with that thing some more. would love to make a fender or something simple.
it'd be rad to have a class where the attendees got to use and get an intro lesson on: the tube bender, the hammer and bag, the press brake, the english wheel, the planishing hammer, the plasma cutter, and a welder. there'd be no mastering of anything, rather everyone gets a taste of how each functions. and in the end, something is created from that bent tube and manipulated metal sheet. maybe during fuel?!

it's christmas eve eve. people have vacated. my security system is finally about 90% good. i have a few more tweaks, but it's RAD. i can watch all 8 cameras on my phone. and the motion detection is adjustable...so cool. i like seeing what's going on outside.

alex from psi came in for a bit yesterday. i can't wait for him to get working on his water buffalo. i think dave will be painting it, too. it should be interesting to see how much alex gets done being that he is a talker. great dude, great teacher, wealth of knowledge...but he always wants to teach. i'm thinking that will impede his progress on his water buffalo. we'll see. it's gonna be rad.
muhktar said he's gonna start coming in to work on his bike that's been in storage for a few months. should be good to have some fresh blood in here to mix it up a bit.

marc bouchet left for chicago today. he took his 71 bmw with him. this is the 2nd or 3rd time he's left cleveland for home. hope he comes back to at least visit. hopefully he shows up on his bike this summer. that thing needs to run. it's just too cool.

kevin dunworth, of loaded gun customs, had a gnarly flat track wreck recently. -not as bad as greg boyd's crash, but bad none-the-less. he's apparently needing some help with making ends meet cuz he's selling his builds and rides and trying his damnedest to keep his head up. not much i can do for the guy but offer kind words. i'd like to go visit him, though. maybe i'll see him at mama tried or something.
al came in today to fuck around with his wing a little and dropped off 6 haynes manuals and a clock with the skidmark garage script on it! what a guy. fucking love that kind of spirit in here.
so thrilled with how the culture of this garage has grown. it's EXACTLY as i always hoped it'd be. everyone contributes, everyone is kind to one another, everyone is accepted, nobody is douchey... i love to hear about members contacting each other outside the garage to hang out or ride together. i wish the success of the culture had a direct and immediate relationship with being able to pay the bills, though. that's a continual challenge. if it wasn't for bear at old bike barn and his corporate sponsorship, i don't know how i'd be making ends meet. he stepped in at the 12th hour and saved my ass.
i gotta start spending time putting parts on ebay. it's gonna bring in that extra one or two hundred bucks a month that will REALLY help, right now. short of gaining another few members super fast, it's the fastest way to get a few bucks. but there's still so much infrastructure to deal with, that i just can't dedicate the time. will the upgrades and building maintenance ever fucking stop?

membership is up to around 25 active members (active meaning paying and actually using the space for what it's meant). it hovered around 15 for about a year till the fall approached. then it jumped. it's been really fun these last couple months. people are forming their own friendships and helping each other non-stop. it's pretty rad to see in person what i always believed would happen on its own.
jordan has been coming in every other day at least. he's gonna put that cb750a in the IMS show. shawn has been diligently plugging away at his 65 triumph chopper. he split the case, took every last thing apart...he's been getting help from bcs in kirtland. jt is teaching himself how to use the english wheel - and his buddy, tom, came in today and donated a neon miller high life sign. it's so cool. dave nolan has been on vacation for a minute, so i haven't seen him for at least a week - and that's weird because he was coming in almost everyday for a few months. pj can rarely make it in anymore. that sucks, because he really knows how to help so many people. karl finally brought in his shovel and took it all apart. elliot is in love and hasn't been coming in much for the last few months. marc's old bmw gets about 2% of the attention it deserves. he's just so busy with school. i love that bike. ethan hasn't been in in months, but hopes to return after the holidays. dorjan and his wife sue recommended a guy named marty bring his son in to work on a quad engine. pretty cool to see another father/son combo. al's goldwing is sick as fuck. he put a skidmark logo on the side cover, too. it sounds SO mean. he's a nut. he said he'd get mine running when he's done, too! pumped! kix hasn't been back in a few weeks, unfortunately. probably won't see her till after the holidays. eisenberg had some sad family shit happen to him a month ago and won't be back for a bit. dude's had it rough the last few months. pelton is basically just storing his wing here. i think he's actually finished everything he had planned. that's pretty rare around here. he's thinking of getting another project. rod's thumb is finally healing and he'll start back on his wing any day. castillo doesn't come around nearly enough. but he did the other day...with a new electric minibike he bought at home depot. dude's funny. reinhardt hasn't been back in a few weeks, either. he's great to have around - he's really smart. alex has parts of his water buffalo here, but has yet to do anything with it. thomas hayes is the shit. he fixes ALL electrical. he's a really good guy that just wants to wrench and help people. fucking canadians are the shit. jr finished his bmw but plans on bringing back another one. he actually dropped off a christmas gift for me the other day. apparently he is/was an alpaca farmer. who knew? karas has been here twice. he's a tough nut to crack. begg moved to ca after getting her bike to run. sass has actually been coming in on the regular for the past few weeks. i think he might actually get his bike done by summer. mark adams hasn't touched his bmws at all in weeks. he's just trying to figure shit out before he dives back into them. jarred is just storing his wing here, not working on it. wilson hasn't touched his xs since he bought a new yamaha in the summer. keegan's xs sits collecting dust, too. ben weinstein talked about coming in to work on his rockets, but he hasn't yet. he should be an interesting addition to the garage. tatsumi left for co to chase a girl. that sucks. he's fun to have around. his buddy marc won't come in to do any work if tat is gone. that also sucks.
gonna speak up on the progressive stage at the IMS show this year. 7 times in three days. gonna highlight the members and the work they're doing to their scoots. maybe get some local businesses up there that have been kind to skidmark and let them pimp their shit.

went to the ix center for the progressive international motorcycle show this weekend. couldn't afford the grand for a 10x10 space, so tim, wilson, wheeler, and i snuck in a bunch of skidmark postcards and just randomly left them around. don't think it did any good. but it was fun.
met dustin kott. he actually spoke with me for a good 30 minutes. really nice guy. totally regular dude that just happens to be a killer builder. asked him if he had been contacted to do the show. i am getting the feeling that all the best builders are being contacted quite regularly about doing shows, cuz all their responses hint toward not being sure if my show was one that called. "did you say discovery, or history, or esquire?" is what i have heard more than once. hopefully, we get our show on first.
ridin'on put the garage on the cover. nice little story inside, too. molly took all the pics, and she was kinda pumped to see her name in print, again. hope it drums up some biz. i guess thunder roads is pissed that they didn't get the story. in truth, i wasn't supposed to tell ridin'on anything, but coolfire took so long to get back to me about what i am and am not allowed to say, that i had no direction for the interview. so i said the truth. when esquire sees it, they're not gonna be happy. but fuck it. should've told me ahead of time what rules i had to follow.
not many members coming in to do work, these days. running out of room, too. mclovin is moving to israel and we gotta do something with his bikes. saw red at the show - his jaw is no longer wired shut, rather it is rubber banded shut. poor fucker. haven't seen his ass in months.
got to talk to phil at poc for quite a while at the show. he's always a wealth of information. glad we got to hang for a while. he has great insights and suggestions for how to proceed with this, that, and the other. i hope he can do a build on the show.
the shop is a TOTAL mess - due mainly to dani and mouth doing fuck tons of work and not putting shit back. it drives me nuts. but i think it'll take care of itself here very quickly when the show gets to filming in a few weeks.
tim and dani have been actively looking for bikes for the show. i like seeing tim with some responsibility in the show. they'll be paying him, too. got his ass a phone, finally. i can see a sense of importance in his stride. call me crazy, but i swear he stands taller.
haven't had a smoke since xmas eve. i feel no different, sadly. thought it'd make me feel so much better... thankfully, even all the smoke happening around me at almost all times, i don't feel the want too strongly.

ridin'on put the garage on the cover. nice little story inside, too. molly took all the pics, and she was kinda pumped to see her name in print, again. hope it drums up some biz. i guess thunder roads is pissed that they didn't get the story. in truth, i wasn't supposed to tell ridin'on anything, but coolfire took so long to get back to me about what i am and am not allowed to say, that i had no direction for the interview. so i said the truth. when esquire sees it, they're not gonna be happy. but fuck it. should've told me ahead of time what rules i had to follow.
not many members coming in to do work, these days. running out of room, too. mclovin is moving to israel and we gotta do something with his bikes. saw red at the show - his jaw is no longer wired shut, rather it is rubber banded shut. poor fucker. haven't seen his ass in months.
got to talk to phil at poc for quite a while at the show. he's always a wealth of information. glad we got to hang for a while. he has great insights and suggestions for how to proceed with this, that, and the other. i hope he can do a build on the show.
the shop is a TOTAL mess - due mainly to dani and mouth doing fuck tons of work and not putting shit back. it drives me nuts. but i think it'll take care of itself here very quickly when the show gets to filming in a few weeks.
tim and dani have been actively looking for bikes for the show. i like seeing tim with some responsibility in the show. they'll be paying him, too. got his ass a phone, finally. i can see a sense of importance in his stride. call me crazy, but i swear he stands taller.
haven't had a smoke since xmas eve. i feel no different, sadly. thought it'd make me feel so much better... thankfully, even all the smoke happening around me at almost all times, i don't feel the want too strongly.
